Music Programming

Music at First United Methodist Church is an integral part or worship.  Our style of music in worship ranges from classical to contemporary. Organist Bryan Latimer also plays piano, writes descants, and sings baritone. Music Director and Chancel Choir Director Rod Bieber has degrees in violin from the Universities of Cincinnati and Michigan. Handbell Choir Director Catherine McMichael directs, composes and arranges music for all of the music groups at church and has degrees in piano performance and chamber music from the University of Michigan. Dr. Mary Wagner directs the Children’s Choir and is a music history and scholar and sings mezzo soprano.

Chancel Choir : Directed by Rod Bieber

The choir is a fun group of people that strives to enhance the overall worship experience. The choir meets on Thursday nights from 7:30pm to 9:00pm, beginning after Labor Day in September. The choir sings at 11:00am service on Sundays from May through September.
What does it take to be a part of the choir? First: A love of all types of choral music. Second: The ability to sight read music is a real plus. Third: Can’t read music? Then a “good ear” is a must (The ability to hear notes and sing them correctly and know when you are not!).  Fourth: A willingness to share your talents. Fifth: We welcome younger members and snowbirds.

Think about how you can play a bigger part in the life of First United Methodist Church.  The more quality voices, the better the music. The more joyful spirits joining in song, the more powerful the experience for everyone. For more information, contact Rod Bieber at (989)792-4544.

Bell Choirs: Catherine McMichael

Bells On High – Rehearses Thursday nights from 6:00pm to 7:30pm, September through Easter. The group rings in worship the second Sunday in October, November, December, Christmas Eve, February, March, and Easter. The choir also performs an annual concert during Lent. Also, this group attends a festival or workshop yearly, if possible.

Bells on High was formed over 30 years ago and now rings 5 octaves of bells and 3 octaves of chines. This group is a Copper Level Choir, leaning towards Bronze, which means playing upper intermediate to advanced level music. All ringers must be able to read music and understand rhythm and counting. You need not be a member of our church. We are always looking for subs.
Kid’s Bells: Catherine McMichael

Kid’s Bells rehearses 5:00pm to 5:50pm on Thursdays. Kid’s Bells are for ages 10 through high school. This group meets for 2 eight week cycles, one starting in late September into November, and one late in January into Lent. Kid’s Bells performs in worship and in concert with bells on high at the end of each cycle. Reading and counting music is a plus, but assistance in learning parts is cheerfully given. Parts are marked for easier learning.
